Ever had a headache?
Of course you have! Everybody gets them! Some people get headaches all the time. Others, may be once in a while, but when they hit, WHAM! With all of the stress that we’re under, in today’s world, it’s a wonder that we’re not all afflicted with headaches, all day, every day!
Ever wonder what causes headaches? It’s funny, because they’re so common, we really don’t think much about what causes them. We just assume that they’re just something that we’re going to have to deal with, and the sooner it goes away, the better! Right?!
Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret. Headaches are COMMON, but they are not NORMAL! The American Medical Association has established that if you get more than TWO headaches in a YEAR, it’s abnormal. Can you believe that? 2 headaches in an entire year??? Some people get two headaches before lunch!
I have my own headache stories. I used to get migraines so bad, I would have to stay in my bedroom, for a couple of days, in complete darkness, with a bucket by my bed. The pain would be so intense, anyone that came into my room, would have to whisper, or else it sounded like they were screaming! No fun at all!
Headaches can be caused by a lot of things, but what I’ve found is, the most common cause of headaches is, surprise…. Stress! Stress can take many forms; physical, mental, emotional. Then, there’s good stress, like planning a wedding, or a vacation; and bad stress, like well, work, or an accident, or an argument with a co-worker, or your spouse. Stress affects your nervous system, particularly your brain and spinal cord. When you experience stress, your muscles tighten, your pupils dilate, even your breathing changes. The next time you’re under stress, take a deep breath, and slowly let it out. Then, take notice of the changes that happen, that you might not have been aware of.
What helped me, and what helps many of my patients, is making sure that my brain is communicating properly with my body. The brain controls the function of your entire body, and it uses your spinal cord, and your nervous system to send and receive important messages all day (and night) long! Your brain and spinal cord are so important, that they are the only system in the body, that’s entirely encased in bone! The skull protects the brain, and the spine protects the spinal cord. Many times, stress will cause muscles to pull a bone or even a whole section of your spine out of place. This is called vertebral subluxation, and it can lead to poor posture, and even more stress in your body (and head!).
Postural distortions put stress on the spinal cord. When your spinal cord is under stress, particularly in the neck, the brain stem, and the nerves that go back up into the head, are affected. The pain that you feel, is the body crying out for help. If that cry goes unheeded, like a car alarm, the body will adapt, and the alarm will shut off. Or, you can shut it off manually, with medications. This doesn’t mean that the cause of the problem has resolved. Headaches are not caused by a lack of ibuprofen in your body!
Many people don’t realize that they have poor posture, because many times, postural distortions don’t hurt. I have found that once you restore proper posture, a lot of their physical symptoms go away. Regular chiropractic adjustments along with a Chiropractic BioPhysics protocol, can correct those postural distortions, and free up your nerves, so that your brain and your body can communicate at the highest possible level!
