Hyperkyphosis is when there is excessive rounding of the middle back exceeding 50 degrees. Approximately 8% of the general population is affected by hyperkyphosis. It is commonly referred to as round-back or even as “hunchback” posture. This results in an individual appearing stooped or hunched over. This is one type of poor posture, and in fact, it is the most common form of poor posture we see at our Hillsdale chiropractic clinic.

A forward head posture commonly causes your muscles to tighten in the trapezius and neck region. This condition is known as ‘forward head posture’, and it can lead to increased pressure on the joints of your neck. Several studies have demonstrated that when these muscles become abnormally tightened, they can cause headaches and migraines, even if you aren’t frequently affected by them.

What is good posture?

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of poor posture

To evaluate how upright a person is, we observe their posture from the front, the sides, and the back. Here is what doctors consider to be good posture:

When looking from the sides, a person’s ear should be over the shoulder

  • the shoulder should be over the hip
  • the hip should be over the knee
  • the knee should center over the ankle

And from front and back, the head should center over the shoulders

  • the head should not be rotated or tilted in any way
  • shoulders should be level, and there should be no rib cage twisting
  • rib cage and shoulders should center over the hips
  • hips should center over the feet.

Deviations from the posture described above may also be considered poor posture. You can check out your posture from the front by standing in front of a full-length mirror. If you have a friend nearby, they can corroborate your posture assessment and look at your posture from the side. If your posture is considered abnormal, it would be to your advantage to seek chiropractic care. Most cases of hyperkyphosis and poor posture can be improved at our Wellness for Life clinic in Hillsdale, NJ.

How chiropractic care can help

At our Wellness for Life Center, we use modern software and diagnostic equipment to detect and measure the severity of all types of abnormal postures. Once we have identified the patterns of abnormal posture that an individual exhibits, our team will formulate a series of corrective exercises and traction sessions for each abnormal posture. Our doctors are certified by Chiropractic Biophysics®, Inc, also called CBP®. CBP® doctors use corrective exercises, corrective adjustments, and corrective traction to improve posture… dramatically. It’s always best to undergo this kind of treatment at a younger age before the spine gets too conditioned to its abnormal configuration. But it’s rarely too late to get some improvement in your posture. Let us help you restore all the elements of natural good posture so that your future mobility and quality of life will remain optimal.

At Wellness for Life, we offer chiropractic care to treat and resolve poor posture & hyperkyphosis.  Additionally, we offer wellness plans for those looking to continue to remain healthy once their problem is corrected. Book an appointment with us today!
