What exactly is scoliosis?

_

First we must recognize and diagnose the scoliosis

Scoliosis is a spinal condition where the spine appears bent and twisted from its normal alignment. This leads to muscle tightness, pain, poor posture, and shoulder humping. In some rare situations, it also causes lung and heart problems. A front-to-back spine X-ray has traditionally been used to define spinal curvature by measuring the angle. To qualify as scoliosis the spinal curvature must be greater than 10 degrees.

In many cases, scoliosis is a permanent condition. Sometimes it can be improved by the right approach, which generally includes corrective chiropractic adjustments, exercises, and traction. When spinal curvature is less than 25 degrees, traditional medical treatment has called for a watchful waiting approach. This approach means a patient would be observed for some period to see if the curvature got any worse. Parents, caregivers, and patients are often frustrated by this approach because it means the condition is not getting treated. At our Hillsdale chiropractic clinic, we take an active approach and do everything possible to improve and/or stabilize the scoliosis.

Treatment for adults and adolescents with scoliosis

We have several non-invasive scoliosis treatment options

There are quite a few ways of treating painful scoliosis. Some medical doctors prescribe medication and perform lower back surgeries. For many people, drugs are not the desired way to treat scoliosis since they provide only temporary relief and can cause side effects. Surgery on the lower back tends to be less successful than either patients or doctors would like to see.

Physical therapists can help scoliosis patients go through rehabilitation to strengthen the spine and gain greater mobility. While these approaches can increase the functionality of the spine, they don’t do much for actual alignment. None of the treatments just mentioned can do anything to reduce the size of scoliosis. The only two things that have proven effective in treating scoliosis without surgery are bracing and scoliosis-specific exercises.

Exercises and bracing

Described below are several different types of braces used to treat scoliosis:

  • Boston Brace – the most common brace used in North America, it applies three-point pressure to spinal curvature to prevent it from deteriorating
  • Charleston bending brace – this brace is worn while the patient is asleep
  • Scolibrace – this has been designed to hold the patient in a position that is a mirror image of the patient’s original deformity.

Many of the exercises developed in Europe to treat scoliosis are included in our scoliosis exercise program and have demonstrated effectiveness in preventing the condition from worsening and stopping its progression. Mechanical traction is sometimes used in conjunction with these exercises to improve scoliosis for patients with severe pain. Traction involves stretching machines that relieve pressure on the spine and help to return a patient closer to normal spinal curvature.
